Adoption Myths
Only rich people can afford adoptions.
While the adoption process can be somewhat costly, it isn't just for rich people. Every adoption is different so you can’t compare your adoption process to that of someone else. It's also possible for some families to receive special funding to help pay for the adoption process.
Mothers who give their babies up aren't good people.
Mothers who choose to give their babies up for adoption are making what is probably one of the toughest decisions of their life. They want what's best for their baby and if they don't have the means to support him/her, then they want to find suitable parents who have the ability to do so. Choosing to give your baby up for adoption so that he/she can have the life they deserve is a completely unselfish thing to do.
People only want to adopt babies who are their race.
This is not true. There are many families in the United States who are interested in adopting children who were born in other countries and come from completely different backgrounds. They want to provide the best for the new addition to their family no matter what their race is.
Babies placed for adoption have something wrong with them.
Birth parents are making an unselfish decision to help give their baby a better life. Perhaps the parents giving the baby up for adoption are young or not financially stable. There are many reasons why parents may contact an adoption attorney or agency for their unborn child, but they have nothing to do with something being “wrong” with him/her.
People who adopt just want to keep up with their friends or make their families happy.
There is a rather long and thorough screening process that adoptive parents must go through with adoption agencies. If there is any indication that someone is wanting to adopt a child so that they are able to impress others, they will probably be declined as a potential new parent. Adoption agencies only want to work with adoptive parents who are able to provide the love, emotional and financial support for a child with no other motives behind their decision.
