Pros/Cons of Transracial Adoption
Transracial adoption has its own benefits and obstacles. It has met with controversy, but many people, nonetheless, go for it.
A child of a different culture and race than its adopted family may promote a feeling of racial awareness in the child and in the family as a whole. The family might develop a healthy respect and understanding for various races.
The adoptive parents may now move around in a racially diverse culture. This can consist of schools, clubs, places of worship, health professionals and even in the area of entertainment.
Additionally, it has its special set of challenges which has to be confronted. The mother and father have the distressing task of discussing racial prejudices that the child might face in the world and even in the social circle of the mom and dad.
People may make insensitive remarks about the child's background. They may even ask the child questions regarding his / her background in an embarrassing way. The children may be prone to negative observations based on their color and race. People might stereotype the child according to common racial profiles. However, don't let these obstacles prevent you from adopting a racially diverse child. It is love that matters.
