When Do Children Understand “Adoption?”
Research has proven that children whose parents regularly talk to them about adoption are more likely to understand it at an earlier age. It appears as if a child who is 4 may understand the basics of adoption, but it may take them until the age of 10 to fully grasp the situation. Understandably, every child is different and some may understand the process earlier and some may take a few more years to really get a good grasp on what adoption really is.
Don’t get frustrated or upset when talking to your adopted child about where they came from. If they sense that you are uncomfortable, they may get an uneasy feeling about adoption and look at it in a negative light. If you are calm and understanding, your adopted child will feel as if adoption isn’t a bad thing and it may be something that’s very common in families.
It’s up to you and your spouse when it comes to deciding when to talk to your child about adoption and their birth family. Maybe you choose to wait until they are around 10 years old, or perhaps you choose to talk to them about adoption at an early age.
