Announcing Your Unplanned Pregnancy
Unplanned pregnancy doesn’t necessarily mean unwanted pregnancy. This may not be the right time for you to begin your family. Perhaps you are a college student or you are single and working two jobs already just to get by. Whatever your situation may be, you have come to terms with the fact that you aren’t financially, physically, or emotionally ready to raise a baby.
Once you have decided to pursue adoption, whether it be an open adoption or a closed adoption, it would be a wise idea to announce your unplanned pregnancy. Your family cares about you. Radis understands that you may be worried about what they may think of you, what they may say, or how they may feel about the unborn child’s father. No matter how upset they may get, they still do genuinely care about you.
Keeping an unplanned pregnancy a secret can cause you to be burdened with even more stress than what you may experience with your daily life. More stress on you means more stress on the baby. Stress can actually harm your baby, so it’s important that you keep it at a minimum. One way of doing so is to announce your unplanned pregnancy.
You may want to take time to write down what you want to say. Practice what you’ll say as if you were practicing a speech. Come up with ways you can deal with the emotions you may feel if your family, friends, or any other individuals make negative comments about the pregnancy. Being prepared before you announce the news will help you to feel much more calm and confident.
You will also need to determine how you want to tell the people in your life that you’ve chosen adoption for your unborn child. It may be difficult for some of them to come to terms with the adoption, but they will come around. You’re giving another family the opportunity of having new life. It’s something you should feel very proud of yourself for.
